Traditional Roman foundation reference
Florence
Florentia is traditionally dated to a Roman foundation in 59 BCE, in a region with earlier Etruscan history. Florence later became a centre of art and civic life. This date is a conventional historical reference, not an exact measure of continuous habitation.
Remember, celebrate, explore
San Giovanni, Florence's patron saint, is celebrated on 24 June, with fireworks over the Arno.
